Airline Employee Killed in Accident at DFW Airport

Tragically, an airline mechanic was killed on March 2 in an accident at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport. The man had worked for American Airlines for 30 years. The accident occurred when the man was closing and locking the door on a Boeing 767 at about 10:30 in the morning. He somehow slipped off the jet bridge and fell 14 feet to the ground.
After the accident, emergency responders who were stationed at the airport treated the man and then took the man to a hospital, where he died. According to officials, it’s not clear what caused the accident and travelers at the airport did not know an accident involving a fatality was underway.
In most accidents that occur in the workplace, the accident victim is entitled to either workers’ compensation, or can sue his or her employer if the employer’s negligence led to the accident. Workers’ compensation is a type of insurance which many employers are required to provide to their employees. If an employer has workers’ compensation insurance, typically employees cannot sue their employers for any accident that occurs at work. Instead, the employee is limited to recovering damages under workers’ compensation. The employee also does not have to prove that the employer was negligent in order to recover.
If the employer does not have workers’ compensation insurance, normally an employee can then sue the employer for any damages from a workplace accident, if the employer was negligent. The employee may also be able to sue any third parties that contributed to the accident, whether or not the employer had workers’ compensation coverage or not.
