Tips for Staying Safe on your Motorcycle in Dallas

Every time a motorcyclist takes to the open roads in Dallas, he or she is taking a risk that a careless driver will cause a serious accident. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 4,500 motorcyclists are killed in accidents each year, and over 80,000 are injured. Texas has the second highest number of motorcyclist deaths in the county, second to Florida.

Many of those deaths and serious injuries could have been easily prevented if the motorcyclist had been cautious. About a third of motorcycle riders involved in fatal crashes were speeding. About a quarter of motorcyclists killed in fatal crashes did not have valid motorcycle licenses. An even more serious problem – over a quarter of motorcyclists killed in serious crashes had a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher.

In some cases, the motorcycle accident occurs due to the irresponsible driving of others or other conditions. Other drivers may be speeding or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Drivers may not be paying careful attention and may not see the motorcycle in traffic. There may be poor weather conditions or problems with the roads like uneven pavement or loose gravel.

If you enjoy motorcycling, the odds are high that you will stay safe if you follow a few basic safety tips:

  • Always wear a helmet. No excuses. The odds of sustaining serious injury or death in the event of an accident without a helmet are much higher than with a helmet.
  • Never ride while you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Get a motorcycle license. Besides keeping you legal, it proves that you are able to safely operate a motorcycle.
  • Keep the bike in good operating condition.

In some cases, you may be the safest biker on the roads, but another vehicle’s negligence may cause you to become involved in an accident.
