DART Train Hits Pedestrian

A man was hit last weekend after he walked in front of a southbound DART train at the West End station. According to a DART spokesman, the train operator tried to stop but could not. At the time of the accident, the pedestrian was not on a crosswalk. Fortunately, no one on the train was injured. The man was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital, but his condition is uncertain.

Obviously, Dallas pedestrians are at high risk of harm, given that they are surrounded by large automobiles and because they lack the protection that automobiles offer. Tragically, every eight minutes in the U.S., a pedestrian is injured in an automobile accident. In the course of a year, automobile accidents involving pedestrians claim close to 5,000 lives, and injure another 70,000 individuals.

A recent study that looked at almost 6,000 pedestrian injuries found that the most common type of severe injury to pedestrians were head injuries, followed by injuries to the chest and abdomen, followed by injuries to the extremities. The study found that the speed at which the vehicle was travelling and the age of the pedestrian played a big role in the severity of the injuries and the odds of survival. About half of pedestrian-automobile accidents are due to drivers not yielding, and over half involve a vehicle that is turning.
