Dallas Man Claims Self-Driving Car Caused an Accident

A Dallas man claims that his car drove him into a guardrail at 80 miles an hour. The accident has raised many questions about the safety of self-driving cars. The man was driving a Tesla, which was on autopilot in Kaufman in August. He was driving on Highway 175, and says he has driven that road in autopilot at least a dozen times.

He reached down to pet his dog that was riding with him, and grabbed a rag to clean the screen of the car’s computer system. When he looked up, the car had hit a curve in the road at 80 miles an hour and slammed into the guardrail. He says that the car did not stop then, but instead accelerated again. His dog jumped in the backseat, and he says the next thing he remembers is waking up with blood on his shirt lying inside several airbags. He had cuts, bruises, and a concussion.

This accident is the latest in a number of self-driving car accidents. In May, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigated the first ever reported fatal accident involving Tesla autopilot. That crash killed the driver of the Tesla.

The federal government is currently working on new guidelines and regulations for Tesla’s autopilot feature, but it is uncertain when those will be released. An investigation into the fatal Tesla accident is still underway. According to Tesla, the vehicle does not become a self-driving vehicle even when in autopilot, and drivers must keep their hands on the wheel at all times.

As new technology involving self-driving cars continues to develop, there are likely to be many more accident involving self-driving cars. It’s uncertain whether the manufacturer of the vehicles will bear all of the responsibility for those accidents.
